History was made by the Kenwick Park Ladies voting to change their name to Kenwick Park Women.
As one of the first golf clubs in the UK to take this step, the women of Kenwick Park voted overwhelming on the 19th June 2018, to shrug off the image the word “ladies” portrays. The vote is much more than a name change. By adopting a modern attitude to language and equality, they proved their willingness to continue to promote a more inclusive and forward thinking approach, to current and prospective members.
There was a real consensus amongst the members, that Kenwick Park should continue an already established drive towards attracting and welcoming new women and girls to the game of golf.
Elaine Houlton, President of the Women’s section commented, “Exciting times are ahead heralded by today’s vote and yet in many ways, a gentle easing into change will be the reality.”
It is not the first time Kenwick Park has been a trail blazer. In 1992 when it was opened, it was the first golf club in the area to give women golfers the same seven day playing rights as the men. This name change shows the pioneering and forward thinking attitude of the Club still exists today.
Our Women play the majority of their competitions on a Tuesday but there are also numerous opportunities to play competitive golf at the weekends. With a wide spectrum of handicaps in the section there really is a bit of something for everyone.
Our Women's section shot to promenance in 1995 when they won the National Mail on Sunday competition at Champ de Bataille in Farance.
Our Womens and Girls sections have helped to develop Elite Golfers too, as Sophie Walker and Holly Clyburn who were both Junior Girls golfers at Kenwick have enjoyed many years on the Ladies LET circuit.
On Thursday mornings the Senior Ladies roll up to tee off at 9.30 am and we have a Beginner Ladies Morning once a month.
A Message from the Captain for 2018/19 Carol James............
It is a fantastic honour to be Lady Captain of Kenwick Park Golf Club.
I am thoroughly looking forward to working with Mick Slowey, our Men’s Captain. I’m sure we will have a great year together.
I have played golf for many years both here, and in America where we lived for 12 years in California. During our time there I was Captain of Shoreline Golf Club, and I worked as the Tournament Chair of Santa Clara Women’s County Golf Association. I was privileged to work with some amazing women.
Here at Kenwick Park I am surrounded by the most wonderful women’s section. We all enjoy playing our gorgeous course. It’s the best in our opinion!
This year, I hope to raise money for a small local charity. The Rhys Donation Foundation. The RDF raises money to support children and their carers during their battle with cancer.
I am really excited about my year as Captain. I look forward to welcoming new members and visitors in 2019.
