Rose and Paul's Captains Weekend

If any Captain's ever deserved a fantastic weekend it was certainly Rose Stevenson and Paul Marsden.  Since taking over the role of Captains' in November 2019 the world has been turned on its head!  Throughout this time they have been absolute stalwarts in their positions as chief ambassadors of the club.  Unwaivering in their dedication, commitment and passion for our fine establishment.

COVID had another cruel trick up its sleeve last week when Rose's Captains Rosebowl had to be postponed due to Rose having to self isolate!  Fortunately she was back in time to savour the weekend.

If the past year or so has taught us anything it is to be thankful for what we have and not what we don't and with that philosophy in mind it was all guns blazing for a fantastic weekends activities!

Captain's Trophy

The Men's Individual Stableford competition was played from the yellow tees.  Despite the course being in excellent condition none of the 148 competitors could better 38 points.  There was however half a dozen players all tied on two under par, 38 points.

At the end of all the card countbacks it was Liam Jaines who came out on top.  Liam is an incredibly popular individual as well as an incredibly capable and talented golfer, if not the most confident!  A recent lesson with Head Professional Paul Spence gave Liam some positive direction and this major triumph shortly followed!

Trackman powered Nearest the Pin Competition

All day Saturday and Sunday morning Professional Paul Spence hosted a special virtual Nearest the Pin Challenge on behalf of Captain Paul.  The Women will also get an opportunity in the coming weeks on behalf of Captain Rose.  The idea as well as offering something different for the Captains' was also to showcase the new Swing Studio to the membership.  A 114 yard hole played over water to a well bunkered, undualting green awaited the competitors.

Out of over 120 attempts would you believe it that somebody actually holed it!  The prize for nearest the pin was a Glenmuir Kenwick Park logo shirt, kindly donated by the Professionals Shop.  Remarkably Jim Cane, pictured below wearing his favourite Kenwick Shirt from 1994 was the man who made the ACE.

To put the age of Jim's green shirt in to perspective, John Major was the Prime Minister, I was just 12 years old and WET WET WET had a number one single with 'Love is all around us!!!  Worried about the prospect of having to buy everyone a drink Jim consulted his solicitor who confirmed that a virtual hole in one only required a virtual drink for everybody, so here you go..........

Following the excitement of Jim's hole in one, Matt Chandler unbelivably repeated the feat!!  Two fantastic shots deserved a prize each so the Pro Shop donated an extra prize.

Sunday's Captains' AM AM

17 teams competed in the four player team event.  It was the best 2 scores to count across the whole 18 holes.  The weekends forecast was iffy to say the least but amazingly despite threatening dark clouds all around the course the rain held off.

Results

1st    Billy Wright, Jake Durrant, Tom Gladwell & Tracey Stobart- 91pts

2nd    Ron Irwin, Nathan Price, Val Pattinson & Wendy Green- 87pts

3rd    Alistair & Julie Harvey, Travis Hesketh & Lesley Burton- 87pts

4th    Bob & Jane Briggs, Graham Jacklin & Karl Koslow- 85pts

Putting Competition

Across the weekend there was a putting competition in progress and a staggering 23 players holed the Captains' long putt, which clearly needs to be made a bit harder next time!  The winner of the bottle of Lanson Champagne, drawn at random was.............

SUE FISHER

Halfway House

All weekend the Captains' hospitality was being enjoyed at the halfway house.  Beer, Wine, Prosecco, Sausage Rolls, Canapes and Strawberries for many proved to be the highlight of the weekend.

Thank you from the Captains'

Dear All

A massive thank you to all the members who played over the weekend. It was a real pleasure to welcome all 148 players to the 1st Tee on both Saturday and Sunday.

Thanks to the generous support from Paul and Michael each player who ACED the virtual nearest the pin competition received a Kenwick Park logo shirt.

The weather turned out far better on the Saturday than had been forecast and Sven and his team presented the course looking at its very best, this made for some good scoring on both days for the Captain’s Trophy.

The putting competition due to the generosity of Kenwick Members raised an amazing total of £520 for the Captains Charities.

A sincere thank you from Rose and me to everyone who helped giving up their time and energies over the weekend. Without your assistance the weekend would not have progressed as smoothly as it did. I must thank Helen, George, Sophie, Jensen and Caroline for running the halfway house and putting competition.  Thanks also to Michael and Paul for ensuring everything golfing runs smoothly. To Sven and his team thank you for all your hard work the course looked magnificent.  To Sunday's starter, Club President Eric.  Finally thank you to all the members who supported us, as ever the ‘Sprit of Kenwick’ brings out the best in us all.
